Greetings! We are glad you've found us. Whatever your reasons for visiting - whether you seek to deepen your spiritual connection to the world, or you want to be more involved with social justice issues in our community, or you are simply curious about an inclusive liberal religion - we hope you will visit us in Madison on the Connecticut shoreline. We have much to offer one another.
VOICES OF A LIBERAL FAITH Unitarian Universalism is a caring religion that
embraces heart and mind. We believe that each person has the right to
determine what is true and right as a responsible member of a community
of faith. We date back to the radical reformation over 500 years ago in
Eastern Europe. Coming out of the Enlightenment, we welcome reason and
science along with the wonder and hope of many beliefs ranging from
humanism, liberal Christianity and Judaism to Buddhism and paganism and
atheism. Our faith draws on many religious traditions, welcoming people
with different beliefs.
We are united by shared values, not by creed or dogma. Our congregations are places where people gather to nurture their spirits and put their faith into action by helping to make our congregation - and the world - a better place. You can read more about Unitarian Universalism on our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page, or by consulting the visitor's resources of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU VISIT The
morning's greeter will meet you at the door, offer you a name tag and
answer any questions you may have. We ask you to fill out a Visitor's Card so we can get to know you better. If you give us your email address, we will send you a few
copies of our Newsletter, The Tapestry and updated announcements as to what is happening during the week. A paper copy of our Newsletter is available for you to take with you. We also have brochures about Unitarian Universalism, SUUS, and information about our Social Action programs, social services and community activities.
Your
children can attend one of the morning's Religious Education classes,
or stay with you during the morning's service. Our
Greeter will direct you to our Religious Education Director and the
classrooms. If you have a very small child, you will find small child
care on the lower level in our multi-purpose coffee room. Our
services last about an hour and typically include music, readings, and
a sermon. After the service, plan to join us for coffee hour. This is an opportunity to meet and talk informally with us and
get to know us a little bit. After coffee, you are welcome to join us
back in the meeting room for a discussion about that morning's service. You can read more about what to expect during your visit on our FAQ page.WORSHIP SERVICES AND TIMES The best way to get to know SUUS is to attend several of our Sunday morning worship services. Every UU congregation has a unique personality, created from their individual lay and professional leadership. About half of our services feature a sermon from our Minister, the Reverend Claudia Elferdink. Other services may be lay-led, or feature guest lecturers or ministers. Because of the varied nature of our services we would like to suggest that you visit us three or four times to really get a feel for what SUUS is like. Our one-hour services begin at 10:30 AM from September to June. During the summer, services begin at 10:00 AM. DIRECTIONS You can find detailed driving directions and an interactive map on our Directions page.
