Exploring religious truth, meaning and experience is central
to Unitarian Universalist (UU) faith, and faith development is central to our liberal
religious education. In communities and as individuals we seek lives of meaning anchored by values and a commitment
to promote principles of justice, love, trust, safety, tolerance and
encouragement. We want to deepen in spirit and nurture our souls; we strive to contribute to and shape the wider
world for the greater good. We recognize that we are part of an interdependent web of life. In the early nineteenth century the Unitarian minister William Ellery
Channing said,
“The great end of religious instruction is not to
stamp our minds irresistibly upon the young, but to stir up their own, …not to
give them a definite amount of knowledge, but to inspire a fervent love of
truth, …to awaken the conscience, the moral discernment….”
Grounded in this tradition and guided by our Unitarian Universalist Principles and Purposes, we offer a weekly religious education program from Nursery School to Grade Twelve from September to mid-June. Each Sunday begins with a worship component of about 15 minutes either in the service ("Message for All Ages") or in a chapel service format. This is followed most Sundays by an hour of class time.
There are also formal and informal adult segments of our
religious educational programming. During the year a variety of adult classes are offered and most Sundays there is an opportunity to meet informally and discuss the service’s
major topic.
