Religious Education News – May 2, 2018

Nate PawelekSpecial thanks to Kimberly Schmid and her new baby, Rowan (2 months).  Kimberly visited the Pre-Kindergarten class last Sunday and introduced Rowan to the children, who took turns holding him (after sanitizing their hands!). Interestingly, the children did not seem especially as star-struck as I was…until they held him!  Rowan was passed patiently from one child to another, plumped in unfamiliar laps and held in unaccustomed ways.  Even though his head drooped and slumped, he didn’t make a peep.  (Kimberly reassured him: “It’s okay Rowan, I’m right here”).

Holding the little baby, wrapped up in a tight, blue onesie, that’s when the children were transformed.  I think it was the awareness of his weight, the warmth of his little form, the smell and feel of his glossy hair, his sparkly eyes.  We were all smiles, quiet and alert, somehow sensing that we were experiencing something very special, even holy.

Without Kimberly’s OK, I invited the children to kiss the top of Rowan’s head. (Sorry, Kimberly!) “All babies love a little kiss on the top of the head,” I said.  Maybe you can tell, I’m still thinking about that baby!  And, I’m kicking myself for not thinking to likewise invite other new mothers from our congregation to introduce their babies to our children during the past year or two.  Karis & Eli, Brittany & Dory.  Who am I missing?
