Religious Education News – May 9, 2018

Unitarian, Judith Ward Howe, started Mother’s Peace Day in 1870 as an anti-war response, preparing the way for the official Mother’s Day holiday declared by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914.  This Sunday, that 104-year-old tradition, Mother’s Day, arrives again!  I am so excited for all children putting down their electronic devices and making breakfast-in-bed for their mothers this Sunday morning!  All children wilNate Pawelekl make sure that their moms don’t have to work too hard on their special day, and all children will be agreeable when she says, “Today, I would like to _____________.”  Whatever she wants, DO IT…happily and gratefully!  Just because.  Remember, one day you might be a mother (or father), and then you will have your special days, too!  (Such things tend to come ’round with age. You’ll see…)

So, this Sunday we will honor moms and those who mother.  Also, this Sunday at church there will be two special ceremonies during the multigenerational worship service:  a Child Dedication and a Bridging.  The Child Dedication is a ceremony in which the congregation (including the children and youth) promises to be supportive and kind to the child as she grows up among us.

A Bridging is when an older child, a teenager, graduates from high school and enters the world of adults. In our case, it is Maxwell Carmichael’s time to cross the bridge from childhood to adulthood.  This is both a happy and sad time for him and his family, and for all of us who have watched him grow up in this congregation.  Congratulations, Maxwell!
