Congressman Jamie Raskin praises Erasing History: How Fascists Rewrite the Past to Control the Future (One Signal Press, Simon and Schuster), saying Stanley’s work, written for the general public, “leaves us with the sense that those who fight for the past  can save the future.”

Stanley’s presentation builds on his previous work on authoritarian regimes’ use of propaganda and the manipulation of a culture’s historical memory. He writes that “the past is the front line in the struggle for a future free of fascism.”

Professor Stanley, the author of seven books, has been the Jacob Urowsky Professor of Philosophy at Yale for twelve years. He recently announced that, due to the political climate in the United States,” he will be leaving Yale this fall to teach at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto. Paul Franks, chair of the Yale Department of Philosophy, calls Stanley a “pioneer in analytic philosophy,” as well as an important public intellectual. His announcement on leaving Yale, along with fellow Yale professors Marci Post and Timothy Snyder, who are also heading to Toronto, garnered considerable attention on various media outlets.
