What if the most effective way to help a struggling world is to start with your own heart?

It’s a common misconception that self-compassion is selfish. In reality, when we cultivate inner security, we gain the heart-space to love others without conditions.

This talk explores how a personal practice of self-kindness becomes a golden thread in the blanket of care we collectively weave to hold and care for others.

Rev. Sumi Loundon Kim is the Buddhist chaplain at Yale University. Raised in a Zen community and a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, she is the author of Blue Jean BuddhaThe Buddha’s ApprenticesSitting Together; and the children’s book Goodnight Love. Sumi and her husband, a native of Korea, Zen priest, and professor of Buddhist Studies at Yale, have two adult children.
