Faith Formation Happenings – 11/20/19

LAST WEEK:

K-3 Faithful Journeys explored spiritual practices through yoga and then heard a story about the history of Sophia Lyons Fahs.  The “tree” pose seemed to be a class favorite!  They then concluded with an exercise on drawing to music to further explore the concept of spirit.  The students used instrumental music to express what their spirit drew them to.  Composers such as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Mozart were among the playlist.  One of the songs was about an insect?  Ask your child what insect the song sounded like?

4 – 6 Harry & UU had a visit from Cathy Wilson Ramin from the Social Justice Coordinating Team (SJCT).  She spoke with the class about an upcoming project they are working on for the Community Dining Room in Branford.  Here are a few more details about the “Giving Tree” from Cathy:

The Faith Formation students will be creating a Giving Tree this holiday season to benefit the Community Dining Room in Branford.  SUUS members will be invited to donate warm clothes and toys to go to the families served by CDR.  Be on the lookout for the tree in the next couple of weeks and grab an ornament if you would like to donate!   Donations will be collected until December 16th.

Students started to create ornaments which list donation items needed for the tree.  They will also be making scarves as a donation to CDR.  The tree will be built, along with help from the other classes, and decorated on December 1.  Check it out at coffee hour that morning after the service!  Thank you, Cathy, for joining us!

The class book drive is now open to the public!  Please bring in your old, gently used books to be collected at church and then donated to New Haven Reads.  Book donation boxes can be found in the Fellowship Hall.

Have you noticed any new writing utensils at home?  Don’t forget to ask your child about their quills?  Maybe they will let you try it out…

My, these students are busy taking action in their community!  Well done, Dumbledore’s Army!

The Coming of Age/Youth are back from Boston and got together with advisors to share photos and experiences from the trip.  They also watched a Ted Talk called The Super Mario Effect by Mark Rober, about the idea that if there is no penalty for failure, then the rate of success is much higher.  The group had an engaging dialogue to follow.  The only thing that was missing were snacks!  We’ll be sure to include those next time.  Any parents heading to the new Costco in Niantic want to pick up a box of snack bags for us?

THIS WEEK:

This Sunday, November 24, is our Thanksgiving service.  All children, youth and teachers should plan to attend our multigenerational choir rehearsal from 9:45 – 10am.

We will have youth visitors from Temple Beth Tikvah joining us for the service.  CoA Youth will welcome the group at 10am after choir rehearsal.

That’s it for now!  I look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday to share Thanksgiving and bread together.

In kindness,
Amy Buckley
Director of Faith Formation
