Dear Friends,

We need your help to call H.B. 6607 for a vote before the CT legislative session ends in June. This proposed law would require state-owned buildings in CT to shut off their nonessential outdoor lights year-round to protect birds and their habitats.

Please ASK YOUR SENATOR to call on CT State Senate leadership to move this important bill forward. AND if you are in one of these key SENATORS’ districts, please urge them to support H.B. 6607 and call it for a vote on the Senate Floor:

  • Sen. Rick Lopes, Environment Committee Chair (Farmington, Berlin, New Britain) Share this “Lights Out” article from yesterday’s CT Insider.
  • Sen. Martin Looney, Senate President Pro Tempore (Hamden, New Haven). Share this “Lights Out” article from yesterday’s New Haven Register.
  • Sen. Bob Duff, Senate Majority Leader (Norwalk, Darien). Share this“Lights Out” article from yesterday’s Darien Times.
  • Sen. Stephan Harding, Republican Ranking Member of the CT GA Environment Committee (Bethlehem, Brookfield, Canaan, Cornwall, Goshen, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, New Fairfield, New Milford, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon, Sherman, Torrington, Warren, Washington, Winchester) Share this “Lights Out” article from yesterday’s New Canaan Advertiser.

Send your Senator a personalized version of our H.B. 6607 support letter.

The version of H.B. 6607 passed by the CT House on May 4 has some positive changes. It would require all state-owned buildings to shut off non-essential outdoor lights from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am for the entire year. This ensures more energy savings (at least $1.5 MILLION) and less impacts of light pollution on migratory birds and their habitats and food sources, including nocturnal insects.

We’re hopeful about H.B. 6607 after it was voted unanimously out of the CT House with bipartisan support and it passed unanimously out of the Environment Committee with bipartisan and bicameral support.

Be a voice for songbirds. HELP make sure H.B. 6607 becomes law.

Sincerely,
Lights Out CT Team
