January 31: Trip to the New Britain Museum of American Art

The next outing planned by the Social Activities & Events committee is a visit to the New Britain Museum of American Art on Wednesday, January 31 (snow date February 7).  We will carpool from SUUS, leaving at 10:00. We have a docent led tour at 11:15 to see highlights of the museum and the exhibition of Shaker Wooden objects. In the 1780’s the Shakers established relatively self-sufficient villages from Maine to Kentucky. Initially, the Shakers separated themselves from the outside world but they soon realized that complete isolation was not possible and they began to create objects for sale.  The exhibition offers the opportunity to view the standards of high quality production. We will have lunch at the museum café and then can explore areas of interest in the museum on our own.

The cost is $15 per person and the tour group has a minimum size of 8 people. Please contact Kathy Helmrich by clicking here or call 203-483-4591 to make reservations.
