SUUS COVID-19 Advisory Group – A reflection from Neil Schultes

During this time of COVID-19, it is easy to become anxious, even scared or depressed.  It is a time when we must pay special attention to our physical health, but let’s not forget paying equal attention to our mental and spiritual well being.  The next few weeks will be trying, but we will get through it.  And, as the Beatles said…. ”I get by with a little help from my friends.”

So, what can you do?   First, let’s rename “social distancing,”  Why don’t we call it “physical distancing with social engagement.”  We must limit our trips away from home to only those necessary and when out keep at least 6 ft apart from other folks.  But at the same time, let’s increase our social engagements.  Let’s be a bit more bold (but safely!).  Zoom, Skype and FaceTime all offer the opportunity to see and talk to lots of family, friends and colleagues.  You can download some of them for free!  Give it a try.  Take advantage of what is going on at SUUS via the website (www. https://www.shorelineunitarian.org).  How about the old telephone?  Think about the folks that you have been meaning to have a conversation with at coffee hour, but for one reason of another, it hasn’t happened.  Make it happen!  Call people who you suspect are having a difficult time and let them know you care. They aren’t going anywhere either and would love a call. Let us not face this time with a “stiff upper lip,” for you will need to loosen it up to talk!  Let us “KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON meaningful and long conversations”.

Stay well and connected!
